The edge is Ovingdean, Rottingdean and Saltdean, still villages in the way they sit on the cliff. The open road is the pier, the marina, the racecourse, the hospital and the university.

Stopped on the A27, the A23 or the A259?
The A259 is the whole seaward edge of BN2, from the pier through Rottingdean and Saltdean. The A27 is behind you at Falmer, and you only meet it if you head up past Moulsecoomb. A car stopped on the cliff road should give the last village it passed, because that stretch looks the same for miles.
